[Guide]Bikers and Motorcycle Clubs

                                                                                                  Origins.

As opposed to the popular beliefs, Motorcycle Clubs have been around for over 100 years, although they started gaining notoriety once the One Percenter era started. 

The first MC, Yonkers MC, New York, Founded 1903, which lives up to this day, served as a civil defense messenger service during the earlier part of the 1900's delivering messages to various government officials throughout the country and started as a bicycle club. Just like the rest of the "antique" motorcycle clubs, it was made out of both males and females that shared the same passions for motorcycles, similar to car clubs, cigar clubs and so on.

 

The One Percenter era started in Hollister, California shortly after the second world war. The Hollister Rally was sanctioned by the AMA(American Motorcyclist Association) and it gathered around 4000 guests... While the law was enforced by 7 peace officers. After many rounds of booze and probably drugs, the motorcyclists started to 'raise hell' by racing their bikes on the streets, there were some fights, vandalism and other unlawful activities which today would be considered to be anti-social. However, during that time, most of the ones that attended the rally were war veterans and they obviously had a hard time conforming to the rules of society, which made them live by their own rules and the gun. Of course, the media tried to make it worse in order to sell their newspapers and stories in their magazines, therefore this famous picture was staged for the Life magazine:

The national opinion about bikers was heavily influenced by the media, making the population have a negative opinion on the motorcyclist movement and the event in and of itself. The AMA(American Motorcyclist Association) was also targeted and as a way to excuse themselves, they declared that "99% of motorcyclists are good law abiding citizens". However, most of the clubs and the guests of the rally knew that it was a lie, but in order to make the regular citizens keep their distance as they thought they have no knowledge about honor and respect like the war veterans did, they jokingly stated that "We're that one percent that you should fear.'

And so, the infamous One-Percenter diamond patch was created to show the middle finger to authorities and the superficial citizens which nobody wanted to have around.

During the early years of the One Percenter era, most of those that wore the diamond on their vest did not claim that they are criminals or that they should be feared. Of course, there were a couple clubs here and there getting loud and drunk, starting fights in bars, but no major crimes were actively reported. But as the time passed, the next generation picked up on the stories of the media and were convinced that the biker image that was created, was actually true. The old blood in the clubs couldn't fight back the young blood eager to prove themselves as the bad-ass bikers they read about in the newspapers. And so, indirectly, the media gave birth to the criminal activity in the Motorcycle Club 'scene' and the new era of Outlaw Motorcycle Clubs which exist up to this day. The post-Vietnam War ages witnessed the forming of new clubs, again, made out of war veterans that had a hard time integrating in society again. 

 

Brotherhood, Honor, Respect, are the most important concepts up to this day in the Motorcycle Clubs. The explanation is simple: The veterans wanted to feel what they felt during the war along their squads and platoons. They knew for a fact that those that stood with them on the battlefield were all they had and they had the same moral values... which they did not find in the society when they returned. As a way to escape the clutches of society, they formed clubs for those that served in the war and were looking for other brothers that felt the same, but also for those that did not serve, yet they had the same moral principles.

Because most of the war veterans were not interested in getting a 9 to 5 job, they obviously had to find a way to fund their passion for motorcycles and the brotherhood which was created. So, everyone looked towards other ways to earn. Some were mechanically inclined and managed to open up car and motorcycle workshops... But some had no skills other than aiming to kill. Because shooting the enemy no longer brought them profit or medals, they looked towards the drugs. It was rather simple. Buy in bulk for a small price, cut them down and sell them for a profit. The clients were not a problem, because at that time most of those that attended their parties were interested in drugs. At that time, there were no major anti-drug movements, so most of the people had no idea about the danger that surrounded the drug use. It was rather easy for them to sell their product and earn enough to keep themselves and the clubs funded well. But, just like in any other market, competitors soon appeared.

It was at that moment that the first Outlaw Motorcycle Club wars started. Most of the members had no interest in public safety, so public shootings and fights became an ordinary activity in the scene. At some point in time, the war was no longer related to drugs. It was fueled by vengeance, just like any other feud. One club kills a member of another club. The club that suffered the casualty wants retaliation so they kill two members of the enemy club. And of course, the 'enemy club' also wants retaliation and so, they kill another few members of the rival club and so on. Because most of the members were trained killers by the Army, they had no issue to live their life by the gun in the society just like they did on the battlefields. The reasons behind their wars were no longer important to them. Territory, drugs, patches and colors were all reasons to put a gun to someone's head and pull the trigger.

Because there were some members which did not turn into savages, by-laws, rules and national associations were created.

These by-laws exist up to this day.

One of the important by-laws revolved around the bottom rocker of the clubs which say the home state of the club and "territory" at the same time.

-If a club that shows major presence and activity in an area while wearing a certain state on their bottom rocker, it becomes the dominant club, in charge of everything that goes in and out of their state.

This also includes the 99%er MCs activity.

-For an MC to be created, the dominant club of the area needs to sanction their colors and patches, giving them permission to wear them in their territory. As opposed to popular beliefs, there are no taxes to be enforced on those that earn their right to wear their patches. Of course, there are exceptions in some states and countries. 

Earning the right to establish a new club is a lengthy process full of tests and time spent to show their dedication.

(I will not name all the steps, because in my opinion they should not be public information.)

The first step is that those that want to establish a new club have to announce their intentions to the dominant One Percenter club in the area. They will be asked to state their intentions and goals as a club. If everyone feels right about the answers, they will be taken under the wing of the 1%er club and they will be taught the codes that have to be followed while wearing the patches.

(This applies especially to three piece MC patch sets. Which are considered to be the hardest to earn and wear.)

They will be asked to attend parties as a group and put in prospect work. Meaning that they will have to do guard duty, cleaning, bar duty and so on.

NO, NOBODY WILL ASK PEOPLE TO KILL AND RAPE NUNS. THAT'S JUST A MOVIE SCENARIO WHICH MANY PEOPLE BELIEVE. IT IS BULLSHIT INVENTED BY THE MEDIA. 

Especially because the authorities and the public already have a bad view on Motorcycle Clubs in general, the last thing that any club needs is to have a group of people that brings heat to their doorstep.

If those that are on probation to earn their patches as a new club tend to attract unwanted attention, they will be immediately kicked out and they will lose their right to the process of earning the patches.

 

 

 

Main types of clubs.

(I will cover the basic ones, I am aware that there are more types but in my opinion, roleplayers will only look up to these.)

 

1. Three piece patch MC.(aka Traditional Club)

The most known type of MC is the three-piece. This means that on the back of the vest, members wear the top rocker, the logo, the MC and the bottom rocker. Side rockers and front flashes are not mandatory. 

The three piece patch MC is considered to have the most dedicated and active members. Hence why, the other MCs and motorcycle groups will always look up to them and follow their example. Also, in 99% of the cases, the dominant club in an area will be three piece patch. The three piece is considered to be the hardest type of MC due to the duties and responsibilities that come with the patches. The rules and sanctions are harsher internally and externally.

This is the only type of MC that can wear the One Percent diamond on the vest.

The process of joining an MC is the longest and most soliciting out of them all. I will detail further on the Joining an MC section.

Most Traditional MCs will NOT accept Law Enforcement Officers. There are a few clubs that are fully made out of LEOs, but they are looked down upon by the rest of the clubs. Same goes for the very few clubs that are not LEMCs(Law Enforcement Motorcycle Clubs)but accept LEOs to probate and join.

 

2. Riding Club (RC)

Riding clubs are an organization of motorcycle riders which sole purpose is riding.

The ones that wish to join don't have a very long period of probation, the main purpose of probation in an RC is to teach the probate to ride in a group and how to behave around the Traditional Clubs for the most part. There are not many limitations as to what bikes a member can have in most cases and the fees, rules, sanctions are rather soft internally. Externally, the Riding Clubs are liable to be under the observation of a Traditional MC which will answer for them if they are to act against National Club regulations. This means that if a Riding Club enjoys raising hell and acting tough when it's not needed, they can lose their patches and they can not do much against it.

Some Riding Clubs accept female members as well.

 

3. Owner Groups.

 

The name says it all: The only thing one needs to join an owner group is proof of ownership to a certain make and model along with a driver's license that's eligible for motorcycle riding. 

Owner Groups are accepted in the biker world, but they don't have any kind of authority, yet they do have some responsibilities. Their patches usually consist of the name of the bike model they are using and the area of residence. The largest one is HOG(Harley Owners Group). As long as one proves ownership of a Harley Davidson, they will pay a tax to the local charter and they will receive their patches from them along with a brief instruction about conduct in the proximity of Motorcycle Clubs.

 

 

 

                                                                                                                  Joining a Motorcycle Club.

 

(I will not note every detail/responsibility/task/sanction etc. For those that want to find out the rest of the information.... Join your local MC. The purpose of this guide is for MC RPers to get a better idea of what they are supposed to do to portray their rank. The rest of the rules and bylaws will remain for the actual patch-holders.)

 

Mandatory conditions to join a club:

1. Be at least 18 years old (or 21 in some cases).

2. Own a motorcycle and be able to ride it. (Most 1%er clubs will ask for an American Made motorcycle. Harley Davidson, Indian, Buell, S&S, Big Dog, Confederate, Arch, Swift etc.)

3. Have a steady income. Freedom is not cheap, neither is being part of a club. You will have to financially support your attendance at parties, runs and so on.

4. Must not be a LEO or a Correctional Officer. Sometimes even having a family member in law enforcement will bring some refusals.

 

1.Supporter

 

Although, anyone can be a supporter of an MC, this is basically the first step for an outsider to make his way up into an MC.

(Some supporters wear a small patch on their vest with the metonym for the club they are supporting. "Support your local 13 MC". Some wear t-shirts saying the same, and some don't wear anything club related.)

 

As a club supporter, you pay no fees to the club and you are welcome to attend the open parties that the club hosts. This will give you the opportunity to get yourself known to most of the members. You are expected to introduce yourself everytime you greet a member/prospect/hangaround. Do it over and over again until people start telling you that you no longer have to introduce yourself because they are familiar with you. 

Don't be too friendly with the members and prospects/hangs unless you know them well. Be polite and respectful at all times and the best thing you can do is to just shut the fuck up and listen to what's being said so that you may learn. (No, this does not mean you have to intrude private conversations.)

 

2.Hangaround

(The following information may or may not apply to certain clubs.)

After getting yourself known as a supporter and you let people know about your intentions to join the club, you will eventually be asked to become a hangaround. You will receive a flash (small front side patch) that says the name of the club's charter and you will also have to pay a couple fees at this point. 

You will rarely be asked directly to do something

Hangarounds will not be forced to do any duties because this is the stage where members just let them show their dedication on their own. 

 Hangarounds are always welcome at parties, sometimes even closed ones. Their main occupation at a party will be cleaning up tables of empty bottles, washing dishes, bike guard duty and so on.  Hangarounds are also supposed to attend club meetings, but they are NOT allowed to enter unless they are asked to by the members.

If there's a hangaround that sits on his ass all day doing nothing productive for the club, he won't be sanctioned for it... But at a point in time, he will be called out and he will be asked if he's sure he wants to join because he doesn't show it. There is absolutely no problem if the man says that he thinks he's not fit. He is free to give up his patch anytime he wants.

 

2.Prospect.

 

If the Hangaround proves his dedication to the club, his name will be brought up in a club meeting and he'll be asked to become a prospect. He will be given a couple back patches as well. 

Some clubs hand out another flash only, some hand out the bottom rocker along with the MC patch, some also hand out the top rocker together with the bottom and the MC patch.

NO CLUB HANDS OUT THE FULL SET TO PROSPECTS!

 This period is one of the most important ones for those that are willing to join a traditional MC. Most of the large one percenter clubs give a minimum of one year probation period, some give more, some give less. Also, some clubs give Sponsors to prospects, some don't. 

The idea of the sponsor is that one full-patch will be directly responsible for the prospect and it's his duty to teach him the ins and outs of becoming a member. However, some clubs refuse to give out sponsor because each member thinks differently. If the prospect will only learn from one of the members, he may be taught a couple things that the rest of the members don't agree. Therefore, most clubs prefer to let the prospect learn from every member at the same time.

 During this time, the prospects will be asked to do certain duties. Be it cleaning up the clubhouse, showing up earlier at a party to help out, handling the bar during an open or closed party, guard the motorcycles if the club has to visit an area that's not known to them and so on. Prospects also have to show up earlier for the club meetings and make sure that everything is clean and ready for the members to come in for the meeting.

Prospects will NOT be asked to do something that the members themselves wouldn't do or haven't done already as a prospect!

Prospects are NOT slaves of the club!

They are respected and will be treated as an equal most of the time by the club!

Prospects will be put through various tests so that the club members get to know how they react in certain situations. 

Prospects will not be asked to break the law! As mentioned before, authorities already keep a short leash on motorcycle clubs. Nobody wants to gain notoriety through law breaking anymore. The 80s are over!

 

 

3.Full Patch.

 

After a prospect has passed his probation period and he got an unanimous vote at the table to be patched in, he will be given the full-patch set. Thus, becoming the backbone of an MC. They have no specific tasks given like the officers do, however they have the freedom to lobby and set up connections and impose new rules, demands. Their responsibility is not as big as an officer's, yet they have almost every right as them.

Many claim that being a prospect is easier than being a member... And they are right. As a prospect, you only answer to your sponsor or your charter. As a full patch, your duties and responsibilities go way beyond your charter. They extend up to the national/international club and even the other clubs in the area. If a prospect gets to fuck up and only get away with a sanction... The member risks losing his vest for a period of time or even forever.

The main duties of the members are to be always active and not just belong to a club. They are supposed to make sure that the prospects are learning on the way as the time passes and he's supposed to keep a respectful relationship with the other clubs and charters even if they do not like them.

 

 

4. Officers

 

1. President

The head of an MC. (Not a boss in most MCs, except for those with a pyramidal structure.) 

He is the main figure to discuss external matters with other MCs and organizations as well as the MCs meeting frontman. The president starts a meeting and he's the one to mark the end of one. Also, he is the only one that is able to hand out patches to those within the club after a club's decision to promote them. In some clubs, the president is able to vote two times in a meeting, but he's the one to support the consequences if the decision he took was wrong.

 

2. Vice-President.

The right hand of the President, internally and externally.

His main duties are to replace the President in his absence, as well as ensure communication between the President and the members all while ensuring that every member and officer is fulfilling their tasks and obligations to the club.

 

3. Sgt. at Arms.

Sometimes called Enforcer. 

The Sgt. at Arms is in charge of internal discipline. He may give out fines and sanctions within the club without a vote. (However, if a member calls a Sgt at Arms out in a meeting for wrongly enforcing a sanction, he will be responsible and will suffer the consequences if the club sees it fit.) 

Externally, the Sgt. at Arms will be the one to throw the first punch. Literally and figuratively. For any conflict or misunderstanding, the club's Sgt. will be stepping forth to "take care of business". Be it warning a member from his club or another club. 

He will be hated by some of the members, but he has no other choice but to leave brotherhood and friendship aside in order to enforce the club's rules. Most of the time he'll feel bad for having to sanction members, but that's the cross he has to carry.

 

4. Secretary.

The Secretary is in charge of communication, within the club and outside of the club as well.

He is supposed to have a way to contact any member of other clubs as well as any member from other charters of his own club. The Secretary announces the dates for meetings, notes every discussion in a meeting as well as the votes and reasoning behind the votes. Secretaries are those that members/prospects call to announce their absence or their requests for the club.

 

5.Treasurer.

The bank of the club.

His role demands him to keep the money of the club, make sure that every member is paying his dues on time and ultimately, inform the Sgt. at Arms(in most clubs) if he is having issues collecting. His duties extend beyond his charter as well, having him inform the other charters about dues and payments in certain situations.

 

6. Road Captain.

The president of the club on the road. The leader of the pack.

The moment the brothers step up on their bikes and ride out, the President gives the club over to the Road Captain. The RC decides the roads the club will take on their way to the destination, the stops they will make and where and he will be the one to announce the meeting point for the start of the trip.

On the side of the road, he is in charge of the motorcycles of the members. He has to make sure that every motorcycle in the formation is in a good condition and can be rode in a group without risking the safety of the other brothers. 

 

 

The following by-laws concern EVERYONE involved in the MC scene.

 

1.Respect. 

 

-As a patch-holder or a non-patch-holder, when you are interacting with a club, you are supposed to walk up to them (given the fact that they are not obviously in a private discussion) and greet them politely. Introduce yourself with your Road Name and Club Name as a hangaround/prospect/patched, or with your name if you are not affiliated to any club. 

Those that do not wear patches, may be an exception to this rule. The patch holders know that the outsiders don't know their rules and they will not see it as an offense. However, if a patched member of a club walks past a group of members of another club(especially one percenters) and they do not greet them, it will be seen as an offense and he will be called out for it. 

 

-Do NOT use the name,colors, logo of a club if you are not a member. This includes brothers/sisters/wives/sons/daughters/uncles/aunts, etc... of a patched memberThis also includes using a name and logo of an MC to roleplay. You are liable to be sued/confronted by the real MC if you do so. Proceed at your own risk.

I strongly suggest you use your own logo and name for the fictional MC you are trying to portray. 

It is considered highly disrespectful to club for a non-member to use the name, colors, logo, patches, t-shirts etc. of a club. (Unless it's support wear, but that's a whole different story. Most clubs only write their metonyms on support wear. If the club's initials are D.B., the support wear will most likely have "Support your Local 42 MC" written on it. 4 because D is the fourth letter of the alphabet and 2 because B is the second letter.)

2.Honor and honesty.

 

There is a very low tolerance for dishonesty in the club scene worldwide. This concerns everyone, patch or non-patch persons: Do NOT pretend to be someone you are not. Always be honest, because at the end of the day, lies will be flushed out and you are liable to get an ass-kicking. 

 

3. Women.

 

-Forget about Gemma Teller. A woman will never have a single word to say about the club's direction or decisions and she will never have access to more information than any other outsider.

 

-Although women can not be patched in a one percenter club, they are not viewed as lesser-beings in any way.

Disrespecting a woman in front of a club member is a serious offense and you will get your ass kicked, no ifs, ands or buts. 

 

-It is highly recommended, as a precaution, that when an outsider or a member walks up to a group of people attending a  biker party, they should introduce themselves and their wife/girlfriend, as well. This will prevent them from trying to hit on her or get her attention in any unorthodox way. 

 

-Women can be patched in MCs. However it is VERY rare for them to be part of a three piece patch MC. Most of the women will be either part of a female-only MC, an RC(Riding Club), an OG(Owners Group) or MF(Motorcycle Family). A woman will NEVER be patched in a one-percenter club.

 

-Around a Traditional MC, besides family, women also have the role of informants. Most of the information members get from the outside of the club comes from women. Why? Because men love to brag to women in order to impress them.

 

 

                                                                                                                      Roleplaying a biker.

 

Appearance:

 

Although outlaw bikers are usually depicted as dirty bearded leather wearing cavemans, in reality those are just a small part of a whole. 

Nowadays, outlaw bikers no longer have a wild appearance and the fashion styles vary from person to person. Some will wear baggy clothing and caps, while some will wear some of the most expensive brands. 

When roleplaying a biker, don't limit your clothing to dirty jeans and torn vests, you can come up with way more apparel items for your character to wear. Even if nowadays there is more freedom when it comes to clothing, it does not mean that roleplaying an outlaw biker that wears pink and paints his fingernails blue will take you far.

 

Temper:

 

Normally, bikers are described as very short-tempered persons and although it's true in some cases, there are very cerebral persons within the community that will avoid acting impulsively. Due to the increased law enforcement numbers and surveillance, outlaw bikers will rarely be seen acting like in those famous movies which depict them as gangs of outlaws raising hell wherever they go.

Again, there is a lot of freedom in creating your character's temperament, giving you enough opportunities to create something unique. In a perfect world, there will only be a couple traits that have to be present into an outlaw's biker temperament: Loyalty, Honor, Respect. However, those are getting rare and are being replaced by powerhungry, greedy and deceiving persons eating the clubs from the inside out. 

 

What would you rather be? The loyal brother that goes all in for the club or the fork tongued one that will plot to take over the reigns of the club for his own gain?

 

Bikes:

 

Since motorcycles are the main aspect of an MC, you will need to have a basic knowledge of mechanical terms and motorcycles. The vast majority of outlaw clubs in the US stick to riding Harley Davidson motorcycles, so pick the one you like and RP the motorcycle you have as the model you like. You should also learn a few names for parts and mechanical procedures so you don't make a fool out of yourself when someone asks you if the bike is a hardtail for example.

 

Occupations:

 

Although it's widely believed that outlaw bikers earn their money from drug trades and stolen parts, that's not entirely true. In order to join an MC, the future probate will need to have proof of employment because being in an MC is not cheap. Ninety percent of the members have legal jobs, be it for a front to justify the money they make illegally or an actual job they enjoy and earn from. 

Outlaw bikers can have almost any job you could think of, starting from lawyers and going all the way down to woodcutters. The only jobs you will NEVER see an outlaw biker have are Law Enforcement related jobs such as Correctional Officers, Law Enforcement Officers, Drug Agency Agents and so on.

 

Think of your character's preferences when it comes to jobs and take advantage of the freedom of choice.

1312: ACAB - All Cops are Bastards.

 

86: Interdiction for alcohol/drug consumption for a definite or indefinite period of time.

 

Bad out/No contact: An ex member that was kicked out of a club and will not be contacted/greeted by anyone from the club scene.

 

Bagger: Type of motorcycle. Usually has a large fairing and plastic saddlebags.

 

Bitch/Riding Bitch: Riding as a passenger on a motorcycle.

 

Cage: Car/Van/Truck.

 

Chapter/Charter: Local organization of different clubs. (Usually found on the front of the vest or the side-rockers)

 

Chase Van: A van that is driven by a prospect which follows the pack on the road, ready to load up members or their bikes in various situations. (Drinking, crashing, motorcycle problems etc)

 

Chopper: Homemade motorcycle. Usually has a hardtail suspension(NO SUSPENSION on the rear end) and a long front end.

 

Church: Club meeting.

 

Colors: Club regalia.

 

Cuts: Patched vests. 

 

Diamond: One perceter patch.

 

DILLIGAF: Do I look like I give a fuck?

 

Flying Colors: Wearing club affiliated vest.

 

FTW: Fuck the world.

 

Hog: American made motorcycle.

 

Independent/Lone Wolf: Non-club affiliated motorcycle rider.

 

Ink: Tattoo.

 

Ink Slinger: Tattoo artist.

 

Left: Ex-member that left the club in good conditions.

 

Metric: Non-American motorcycle. (Measurement unit)

 

Mother Charter/Chapter: The main charter/chapter of a club.

 

Old Lady: Wife/Girlfriend of a club member/prospect.

 

OMC: Outlaw Motorcycle Club (1%er club)

 

Poker Run: Annual run hosted by a club, usually mandatory for every club. Basically a poker game on wheels. The attenders draw a card on each stop and compare hands at the end of the run.

 

Run: Annual/Monthly mandatory ride for the patched members.

 

TCB: Taking care of business. (Performing tasks given out by the club.)

My suggestion would be expanding on the stages of being a hangaround, what the majority of clubs look for in a hangaround, and the idea behind the prospective stage. 

 

Another common misconception is that prospects get beaten down all the time, treated like horseshit and put behind the bar. This is far from the truth. I've seen it plenty of times on the server, so it would be cool to see you clear that out the way on this thread.

 

Errors here and there, nonetheless, it's a good try.

 

edit: Hangarounds don't have any specific patches, side rockers or any of that. The hangaround stage is the period where you ask yourself if the club is right for you, and where the club ask themselves if you're right for them. They pay no dues whatsoever.

You should also expand on women being in the club as most people have misconceptions about that sector and often take it the wrong way i.e. what women do within the club etc.
