  4. Mehiko (Mecovy+Mahiko's) mod compilation Introduction This modpack contains a wide variety of mods across GTA 5, which normally would not be compatible for RAGEMP and would only work in single player. So what we've decided to do, is find ones which we believe work well and improve the GTA experience, and port them over. And as there is no ENB involved natively, there is a minimal FPS decay. Respective credits for the initial mods go to their owners, we will include a full list soon. Specifications and frame rates Low tier specs are like... old i3's and RX 560's. 50FPS Medium are like, 1060's, 970's with medium range intel or Ryzen, 70FPS High we're talking 1080's/2070's+. Maxed out (100 fps+) All numbers given are the mean average of what results people are reporting, and normally closer to the worst case scenario than best. Known Bugs Known issues - Vespucci Canals to the ocean has a buggy line, Vespucci uses a different type of water which isnt covered by the fixes we've deployed. There is also no compatibility with NVE's ENB, if you load the game and its bright red, or sepia coloured, disable the ENB as it will work. (EACH SYSTEM MAY VARY, these tests were conducted by our team of modpack testers.) Those involved Big thanks to @Mahiko for his hard work in making this possible, and for our testers, @Pogis @levbrous @Himant @Bunting @Tennplugg @SaintBatemanofWallStreet and @Dios Complete V.3 package - https://www.mediafire.com/file/cyrnc38e7hihkyv/Final_-_Revision_3.rar/file (might need a few more mins on the upload bit) Upgrade from V.2 to V.3 - https://www.mediafire.com/file/18xhh49o3bz8lgd/Rev_3_update.rar/file Change log: Changed over all brightness of emergency vehicle lights. Fixed stupid amounts of flickering in the distance. Common.rpf & x64g.rpf goes into main directory and update.rpf goes to update folder Install instructions will be included in the file, however it is a simple case of drag and drop in order to get this mod pack functioning. 5. Short description: Allow people to show notes to others instead of having to hand it to them. Detailed description: Allow people to show notes instead of having to do /inv then /giveitem and then they have to use /useitem Or even if pressing I, clicking the note and clicking give and then they have to click the item from their inventory and use it. It reduces clutter as notes are already quite buggy as far as I've noticed. It will help make it easier for people to show notes, menus, etc. Commands to add: /shownote [inv id] [targ] Items to add: N/A How would your suggestion improve the server?: Reduces clutter because notes are quite buggy. Additional information: N/A If this isn't possible, sorry then I guess.

  6. Short description: Make company/business phone numbers Detailed description: At the moment it is very annoying when company/business related things use your own phone number because some of the messages you have are company/business related. I think it would be way easier if we had a different number people use to get contact of the business/instead of trying to message or call someone who is offline. Commands to add: /usebusinessphone and /usefactionphone Items to add: Phones for company/business owners to buy. How would your suggestion improve the server? It would make it so much easier for people to get contact with the company/business instead of calling people who are offline. Also it would stop people calling or texting you when you not working or doing something else. Additional information: N/A

  7. I can't speak for everyone nor do I have the end-all solution but with the type of RP I'm involved with it's hard to say it's not needed. Being a pilot in the SD and having to follow vehicles evading on the ground can be remarkably difficult due to the limitations of sync draw distance, etc. Having to type while flying with both hands just simply isn't something I can do with any effectiveness at all. (Only during pursuits obviously, I'm happy to stop flying and type at any other point, which we're already required to do). It's currently against our department policy to use voice chat for anything outside of pursuits and even then using our in-game text based radio TAC channel is preferred if it's possible to do at the time. It's just one of those things that's been up for debate since I started RPing back in 2009.

  8. Some thoughts about it: - Overall: I mean, it is a good concept and welcomed, that changes in the government are seen as necessary, and this is great, but: I see also, that if the Leadership is chosen, then he should have full responsibility in putting his team in place; also accepting members. Why? Quite easy - it should be RP-d, that you meet with people, get to know them, et cetera. Now - if you register yaself as a member and get it, you have no real opportunity to do that, as the Chairman. Why it is important? Easy - stupid takeovers by some people, who will group and say "We are not happy with your Leadership after one-two weeks, let us vote for new Leader. Our friend Max is good for it!" Yeah, it can always be limited, but when IC-ly it leads there, then -- that would be a problem. - When it comes to "who can vote", then let us be real - 90% of the player base is not from the US, so your logic is - we let the 10% vote? Most of the people play as immigrants, because they are not from the US. So - one player=one vote. That should not become an issue. BUT - what should be thought about: what about the felons and prisoners, who can not vote also in the US. I would go realistic there and would restrict that, but not who is a real American and who is not. It also leaves out the issue, that people will do alts (US citizens), who they only vote with. - When it comes to the two parties (Democrats/GOP), then this is a great idea. It was kinda stupid to make a Conservative Party in the US. When it comes to Green and Libertarian Party - NotBond mentioned that you can run individually as well later on, when elections come - then you can take the stances of those parties, which is cool. If we make four parties, it would just make it too colorful, imho, because there are people, who are interested in political RP really, but I am sure, that this number is clearly under 100, so we would have not a Green Party with 5 members - a Party should also have a bit of realistic amount of members, et cetera, not only the Chairman and five of his buddies. - The party system by NotBond and admins is also good, because: This leaves exactly out the possibility, that some popular Russian mobster (no personal attack intended) won´t take over the Government as a Mayor; or send his Puppet there. Because if people are gathered in two parties, there will be more responsibility for the Leader to listen, and work also towards the realistic goals, what the respective Party´s are all about. Not some "Middle Ground Party", what was planned to be created by some people - which was purely made for popularity reasons: taking the best ideas from the right and left. - COO was chosen and I think, that the person for the job got it. The LFM should also think, how they will look at corruption in the office: what is realistic and what is not. Nowadays, IT IS pretty UNREALISTIC, that some mobsters will blackmail the Mayor of Los Angeles, so-- this is something, which should be taken into account. I am pretty sure, that the mobs will try to do that, and this would be unrealistic (I mean, meeting him and making some threats, et cetera). Of course, when the Mayor will do something shady and someone IC-ly gets some pictures and proofs and tries to blackmail like that - this is cool. My worry is only about the mobsters trying to start to extort the Mayor out of nowhere, like the extort businesses, which are 15 meters from Police Departments. - One more thing: surely should be taken into account and looked at people, who have done political RP in the server, and they should be given also some bonus points. I used like 600 hours of my character development around Republican RP, making events, talking with businesses, meetings, et cetera and that is just a slap in the face to just delete it all as it was never part of the RP. I am not meaning that I should be Chairman, which I do not want, but surely, we deserve a fair shake, who have tried to do some political RP. We were kinda active, but after the news, that the Government will not change anyways (in February or so), it was kinda de-motivating for a couple of months. - LFM should also look realistically at the events, which will be taken by both parties during the election cycle. I would imagine, that it is not far-fetched to say, meaning it is GTA, that some members try to go to the mob and pay some money to get rid of the opponents. This should be NOT DONE, because you DO NOT see politicians being killed right and left during election cycles in the US. Getting opposition research by spying and trying to make scandals, smears, is fine, but trying to assassinate (I promise you all, if it is not controlled, even IF IT is a PK - meaning the PK person can not be part of politics again) opponents will come in play.

  11. New York Mafia, Los Santos Invasion July 12, 2020 Bigwig Nicholas Casalo, according to several sources is set to be released on Monday this week after serving a ten-year sentence on extortion charges stemming from a 2010 FBI raid. The son of the late reputed former longtime mobster John Casalo also known as The Tesla Of Numbers, who the FBI one time accused of "running the show behind the curtains" on of the biggest mafia factions in northern New York. The man behind the notable real estate racket that made millions upon millions of dollars for the five families. A great mind for numbers that made him a powerhorse in the real estate racket until he was shot to death outside his home at Strong Road, New York in 1986. Nicholas Casalo or as some would call him, The Merciless Don would run errands for made men and capos in the Bulante crime family as early as his teens rose to power in the mid-eighties when a war broke out between the five factions in New York. When mob-boss Neil Bulante was sentenced to six years for several racketeering charges in 1988 while the war was still alert, he trusted Casalo to be the acting boss. The young Nicholas Casalo would go on to be the acting boss for years until Bulante was eventually released in 1994. But, Nicholas Casalo would now oppose Bulante's request to take back the reigns and a war would break out within the faction itself as a result. The war would go on until 1996 where Neil Bulante would eventually surrender after one of his sons were killed during the war. Nicholas Casalo would now be the formal mob boss of the Bulante crime family. During the famous 2010 mob sweep that got Casalo and several others indicted in New York, a federal tape with Casalo and reputed mobster Anthony Sulano present revealed how The Merciless Don was heard trying to extort a local club owner on tape, "You either pay us, or we burn this place to the ground with you and your entire fucking family inside." The federal tapes also revealed Casalo and co. conspiring arson and assault on others who refused to be extorted. Nicholas Casalo, including the several other mobsters in those tapes landed sentences ranging from five to fifteen years depending on their roles. In recent weeks, several reputed mobsters associated with Casalo in New York has touched down in Los Santos, and has been seen together with well-known mobsters in the Los Santos underworld. Is this an attempt at reviving what they once had in New York, in Los Santos now that Casalo is set to be released on Monday? Only time will tell.

  12. Short description: Force players to input a description of their body when they use /acceptdeath. Detailed description: I’d like a system for players to use acceptdeath, and be able to give a description of their body. Specific features of their body, visible injuries, possibly the cause of their death? When a player uses acceptdeath, they should get a window prompted on their screen (the new GUI every new feature has would work great), where they can input whatever details they’d like into the box, perhaps a character requirement to ensure people fill it out properly? And then you can put some text above their head, prompting them to use maybe /inspectbody which will show the description of the nearest body within a few feet of you? Commands to add: /inspect | /inspectbody | /inspectcorpse Items to add: N/A How would your suggestion improve the server?: This will provide better RP for everyone, if you’ve ever stumbled across a random body, it’s odd, as there’s no way for you to know how they died. This will allow you to give more RP to anyone that sees the body, PD detectives will have more fun being able to see a body’s state, FD can go through more treatment RP, i just think it’d work better. Additional information: I was also thinking about a suggestion like this but with the /setinjuries and /injuries command, which are super useful if you don’t know they exist! Maybe a text prompt in chat that says someone should set their injuries using /setinjuries and then amending the text above their head for people to use /damages AND /injuries on a downed player to get ALL the details. Let me know if you’d agree with that, too! Super sorry if there’s any shit in here that doesn’t make sense, 2am and I’m tired but wanted to get this out before I forgot.

  15. Short description: Working Pay Phones Detailed description: There are many payphones in the game, and I think it would be cool if you could make calls from them the same way you can make calls from pay as you go phones. Just instead of /cellphone, you could use /payphone. It would only work in range of a payphone, and the interface/UI of it could be similar to the ATM's. Once you punch in the phone number, you would then be charged like pay-as-you go. Commands to add: /payphone Items to add: N/A How would your suggestion improve the server? It would allow people who have recently been mugged and had their phones stolen to report the crime without having to run back to the cell phone store. Also, if you choose not to carry a cellphone, you could use them to make calls when needed. Additional information: I'll be honest, I have no idea how hard this would be to implement in comparison to the pay off, but it would be a neat feature to have if possible. If not, no worries, spaghetti at the wall. ?

  18. So then, changing the subject to something more relating to this. I really think people need to wait, speculation is in its own name. You are guessing, based on ever changing information and zero idea whats going on properly behind the scenes. If you'd stop arguing for a week and wait, I'm sure things will start to become clearer as to why things are like this. I have a semi decent idea of what they are going for as I'm quite privileged to know a guy. And I think everyone will seriously begin to realize all their bickering is entirely wrong and missing the point of what they want gov to be. Whilst clashing of ego's is indicative of most politicians, it serves no place on an OOC stage and only digs each of you a deeper hole. Just trust me, and have a little faith of what they're doing and you will begin to see the grass is greener in their ideas. So relax, head to the winchester, grab a pint and this will blow over and produce something decent.

  19. What? I clearly said my a lot of customers are not willing to wait. Some a very patient but a lot are not. I clearly said I feel pressured by the players who come to my dealership to speed up the process in some way. I've had customers leave and get frustrated after not getting attention in 3 minutes. I was really clearl about that. Plus IRL Government mandated stuff like inspections, insurance and other government mandated stuff is what prolongs the process IRL RP is streamlined and sped up for a reason. Ain't nobody tryna roleplay doing their taxes. A lot of the mundane aspects of life has been streamlined to provide an more enjoyable experience for the players. You don't make 200k in 40 hours irl.

  20. Yeah trying to find RP can be hard because people are either indoor rats or they're simply too scared to roleplay outside of their houses. All thanks to some "bad apple" type beat criminal roleplayers who love to make LS look like we're in fucking Afghanistan. Fortunately though, even most criminal roleplayers RP being casual civilians when they're not doing business and they're open for interactions with people. People might also think that certain hoods/districts are there to segregate us players, but it's bullshit. If you come down to K-Town you're not gonna get robbed for being some white. If you go to the Davis LTD to get yourself a sandwich you're not gonna get killed by a bunch of black gangsters. If you go to little Armenia - same thing, it's not like criminal factions on this server hold down their turf like it's their fortress. Everyone wants people around them to have someone to RP with or even be a passive observer. I'd encourage people to socialize with anyone and kind of remind themselves that... yeah you might have seen some nicknames on the forum in the Factions section, but that doesn't mean these people are criminals 24/7. I've been roleplaying a mobster's girlfriend for about two weeks now and I never got caught in their shit, these guys are normal civilian roleplayers who do their dirty business behind closed doors in private when there's time to do business. I kinda feel like all of this must be clarified because people segregate each other way too much. I hope that after reading this reply, people are gonna chill out and go out to meet people. Don't be scared because we don't bite unless you come down to South LS to call people n-words or you come to K-Town to troll and call people chinks.

  22. There's also a server rule against metagaming, but here we are. That this is the most-touted response by LEO role-players when these threads come up always has me rolling my eyes. If it held weight then you could have closed down the entire pedophilia controversy of late by just saying "Well, that's against the rules". It's not an argument. That the rules exist are meaningless. The question becomes one of enforcement to make the rule itself meaningful, and there's already plenty said in that respect. The factions do a great job of not misusing TAC channels, especially compared to servers I've been on in the past. But this does nothing to assuage the issues brought up by the O.P., and does nothing to combat the discussions by faction members which go on endlessly within all the channels that are not the TAC channels. I am not claiming that all these discussions are somehow, by default, metagaming. The claim, and the issue, is that you can't police all of these individual discussions to ensure metagaming isn't happening, and when it does happen, it's still nigh impossible to punish. Again: the metagaming examples outlined by the O.P., egregious or otherwise, essentially require that those being reported volunteer the evidence that would see them punished for their rule-breaking. This makes the enforcement impossible. It damn near renders the rule itself moot. And whether we want to talk about PD/SD and TAC channels or not-TAC channels, it's the same issue. You're going to have numerous individual channels which should only have private conversations going on, but can and easily do perpetuate metagaming on an almost casual level, no matter if these are civilian role-players, gang members, security companies, whatever, that simply cannot be overseen at all times. It's a meme at this point. This thread wants to find answers towards avoiding VOIP misuse, but we have to tiptoe the discussion so as to avoid talking about the only factions in the server which receive a server-hosted and approved TeamSpeak with which to use. Who do you think this discussion would most affect? Even if we came up with solutions while never talking about LEO role-players, whatever those solutions may be would still have to pass through these factions first because it would most affect the way we currently operate more than anyone else. Or are we ready to admit that, actually yes, we do hold LEO role-players to a different standard regarding these rules so as to maintain the advantage TeamSpeak gives us? It's ignoring the elephant in the room. So we're in a position where we can't even ensure nor properly enforce metagaming rules on the one server-approved private VOIP channel, let alone any others, while telling everybody else that VOIP can't be used because of potential metagaming. Why the dichotomy? Why are we given the honour system, boy scout pledge when everyone else is told to get stuffed? If we're looking to talk about actual double standards, then there it is. The only arguments for it always boil down to pursuits and shootouts, and I really couldn't give less of a shit about it since nobody else cries about dying in a shootout or crashing their car because they didn't have the benefit of VOIPing with their buddies and there would still be role-play produced by these scenes without the existence of VOIP. It always reduces itself to maintaining an advantage that, for whatever reason, the server allows to us any nobody else, and always held up on rickety arguments that, if made by any other groups, would quickly be shot down or simply refused outright by pointing back to Rule #3.

  31. Preface Purpose of this guide will be to create overall guide about roleplaying a Korean. The guide is currently work-in-progress and will be updated regularly and will go in-depth as I get more time to work on it. The guide was mostly inspired by Liew's Chinese-American guide. History of immigration A small number of Koreans immigrated to the United States in the early years of the twentieth century. Their numbers were so limited that they were a fairly dispersed group, not gathering in enclaves as other immigrants have. They experienced the same kinds of discrimination that other Asian groups encountered. Korean Americans thought of themselves more as exiles than immigrants and felt they were without a country. Immigration quotas kept the number of Korean immigrants relatively low through the 1950's when most of the immigrants that were already here were Korean War brides, orphans, or students. Since the 1960s, immigration from the Korean peninsula to the United States has increased dramatically, driven by political, economic, and military relations between South Korea and the United States. In 2017, approximately 1 million Korean immigrants—the vast majority from South Korea, with just a tiny fraction from North Korea—resided in the United States, representing 2.4 percent of the 44.5 million immigrants in the country. After the Immigration Act of 1965 removed restrictions on Asian immigration to the United States, the Korean immigrant population grew significantly, from just 11,000 in 1960 to 290,000 in 1980, marking a 2,500 percent increase. In the following decade, the population nearly doubled to 568,000 and did so once again in 2010, when it reached a peak of 1.1 million immigrants. Modern day immigration Modern day Korean immigrants arriving in US, and Los Angeles and San Francisco bay area in particular can be divided in two sub-groups. First group are students studying at prestigious universities like UCLA, Caltech, USC, of which many decide to stay in US after graduating, starting their own start-up companies supported by tightly knit Korean community. Second group is comprised mostly of first generation Korean businessmen who are venturing in lucrative and ever-expanding tech, fashion and entertainment industry. Main reasons behind that is that Los Angeles is more familiar to Koreans because Korean culture and language is widely used in the area and also because of the fact that many U.S branches of Korean brands are located in Southern California. Many industries such as fashion and sales have the opportunity to flourish while being surrounded by the content and entertainment industry of Hollywood. Modern day Korea Town From the furniture stores on Western to the night life in Chapman plaza, to the brightly lit screen at Aroma Center to the never-ending law offices down Wilshire, Koreatown has undoubtedly become one of the most bustling parts of the melting pot known as Los Angeles. Every minority group that has immigrated to the United States and created their own sub cultural haven have been through an onslaught of issues and problems, ranging from cultural identity, to fighting against racial discrimination and prejudice. The Korean population have made themselves a home in Koreatown, and assimilation into this community is a relatively smooth transition from the everyday life in modern suburban Korea. Throughout their history here, Koreans have developed fast growing businesses as well as closely knit relationships within the community. Family takes huge precedent in the Korean community, and it is seen throughout daily conversation. Respect is always shown, and traditions and customs have been pretty much transferred over from the motherland. California is home to the largest population of Koreans. Many Koreans came from Korea to America in search of a better life, so they formed close circles of friends and business in California. They are now expanding their horizons and opportunities, and are forming close alliances with other communities as well, mainly being Latinos and Hispanics. Koreans are known for their prideful history, so they strive at everything they do. Combined with natural intellect and being well educated in Korea, the Koreans in Koreatown are naturals when it comes to business and striving to succeed. Major industries include manufacturing, importing, night clubs, cafes, karaoke bars, dry cleaners, liquor stores, and community tradition-based establishments such as herbal medicine shops and Korean markets. Los Angeles riot The 1992 Los Angeles riots were a series of riots and civil disturbances that occurred in Los Angeles County in April and May 1992. Unrest began in South Central Los Angeles on April 29, after a trial jury acquitted four officers of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) for usage of excessive force in the arrest and beating of Rodney King, which had been videotaped and widely viewed in TV broadcasts. Many Korean Americans in Los Angeles refer to the event as Sa-I-Gu, meaning "four-two-nine" in the Korean language (4.29혁명), in reference to April 29, 1992, which was the day the riots started. The week of riots following the acquittal of the LAPD officers in the beating of Rodney King has been considered a major turning point in the development of a distinct Korean American identity and community. Over 2,300 mom-and-pop shops run by Korean business owners were damaged through ransacking and looting during the riots, sustaining close to $400 million in damages. Media coverage has framed the looting and destruction as a result of growing social and economic tensions between the Korean American and African American communities. Korean Americans responded in various ways, including forming activist organizations such as the Association of Korean-American Victims and increasing efforts to build collaborative links with other ethnic groups through groups like the Korean American Coalition. During the riots, many Korean immigrants from the area rushed to Koreatown, after Korean-language radio stations called for volunteers to guard against rioters. Many were armed, with a variety of improvised weapons, handguns, shotguns, and semi-automatic rifles. According to Edward Park the 1992 violence stimulated a new wave of political activism among Korean-Americans, but it also split them into two camps. The liberals sought to unite with other minorities in Los Angeles to fight against racial oppression and scapegoating. The conservatives emphasized law and order and generally favored the economic and social policies of the Republican Party. The conservatives tended to emphasize the political differences between Koreans and other minorities, specifically African Americans. Modern day Korean organized crime Korean organized crime began in Korea in the 1940’s. It started as political groups seeking to further the Korean National Independence movement which later became corrupt. In Korea, they are referred to as “PAs” and have rigid organizational structures. Their leaders are usually in their 30s and 40s, and the activity members are usually in their teens. As the Korean government moved to dismantle the PAs, the leaders fled to other areas, including the United States, to re-establish their criminal organizations. They settled within various Korean communities in country and formed more loose-knit organizations compared to the rigid structure of the traditional PA. Although structured, the various Korean organized crime groups in the United States do not have a single leader and vary in size from 20 to more than 100 members. Most of the illegal activities perpetrated by these criminal groups take place in Koreatown or are directed from that area. Crimes committed by the Korean organized crime group include prostitution, alien smuggling, gambling, business fraud, robbery, burglary, auto theft, carjacking, and the counterfeiting of designer clothes and compact music discs. Modern day Korean gangs Ever since there have been Koreans in Koreatown, there have been Korean gangs. The hardships on pleasing the ever growing expectations of Korean parents, combined with the struggle to find ones identity amongst the melting pot known as Los Angeles make joining a gang an appealing choice for the confused Korean teen seeking acceptance. The original gangs first came from Korea, and flourished by being involved in illegal activities. These gangs were feared amongst the community, but also highly respected. These days, the respect has all but left the modern Korean gang member, and has been replaced with the typical image of a hoodlum wearing baggy pants and various sports jerseys. They are more of a nuisance than a criminal threat. The biggest harm they are doing is to themselves by not going to school, and trying to indulge in a life that is glorified in Korean soap operas and dramas. Most are barely teenagers with dreams of carrying a gun and being feared by their peers. More than anything, they seek social acceptance, and the situation is “power in numbers” at its worst. Amongst the Korean community, PC rooms, known as “PC Bahngs” have become very popular. Games such as Counter Strike, Everquest and Warcraft can be played here amongst peers. Many students have been ditching school to spend excessive amounts of time at the PC rooms. More seriously, these PC rooms, now almost half a decade old, have been the hangouts of many Korean gang members. Because of the excessive amounts of PC rooms scattered through Koreatown and the Los Angeles area, gangs have claimed certain PC rooms as their hangouts. Gambling Lotteries, horse racing, boat racing, and cycling are all legal forms of gambling in South Korea. However, casino gambling is strictly prohibited — with locals facing a three-year prison sentence if they’re caught having a flutter at a tourist casino. What’s more, any citizen found to have indulged in the act abroad can face prosecution on their return to the country. These charges are not regularly brought though and are often used in tandem with other charges to secure long-term convictions. Of the 23 land-based casinos in the country, only the Kangwon Casino allows Koreans to gamble. It’s no coincidence that it’s pretty difficult to get there — remotely located far north of the major cities, at the foot of a ski resort. Online gambling is strictly illegal in South Korea, with the government taking an active role in policing it. South Korea’s National Intelligence Service recently reported that North Korea had begun to operate online gambling sites targeting South Korean players — as well as punters in China and Malaysia and organized crime rings within the South Korea. With all those factors taken in consideration, Koreans are more likely to get addicted to gambling when exposed to gambling in Western world due to lack of any prior experiences with such. Drugs ‚‚K-pop star and actor Park Yoo-chun dominated headlines after he was accused of using methamphetamine with his ex-girlfriend, Hwang Ha-na, the wealthy granddaughter of a major dairy mogul. At first, Park denied the allegations, but he has since confessed -- adding to a long list of other celebrities facing public shame for drug charges in recent months. '' South Korea takes drugs very seriously. While much of the United States has decriminalized or even legalized marijuana use, those who partake in South Korea can face up to five years in prison and a fine up to 50 million won ($42,730). ‚‚Korean society does not approach drug addicts with the goal of healing then’’ said Kim Hyeong-gun, head of the Seoul Addiction Institute of Psychotherapy. ‚‚ If one uses drugs, society immediately views them as criminals.’’ Arrests are also on the rise. There were nearly 6,800 cases involving a violation of the Act on The Control of Narcotics in 2017, according to the latest numbers from the Korean Statistical Information Service. That's a 126 percent increase since 2003. Drug arrests due to possesion of cannabis are only 1/100 of all drug related cases in South Korea. Crystal Meth remains the most commonly used drug, accounting for most drug related arrests. Other drugs that are well known are club drugs such as ecstasy. These continue to grow in popularity among college students. However, methamphetamine continues to be the drug of choice for Koreans. Drinking culture As society developed, so did the drinking culture in Korea. In the past, people drank on specific days like New Year's, but presently alcohol can be consumed regardless of the occasion. The goal of drinking parties is to promote good fellowship and open one's heart to talking. In South Korea, it is traditional that when a person gives an alcoholic drink to another adult, the person has to offer the drink respectfully with two hands. When pouring a drink, the cup should be held with the right hand, and the wrist of your right hand held lightly with the left hand. Same applies when holding the bottle and pouring a drink. It is customary to wait until the glass is empty to pour another. There is also a tradition for receiving drinks. When receiving drinks, the same etiquette applies when pouring drinks. When elders give alcohol to a younger person, the younger person should receive the drink politely and with gratitude by saying "thank you" or by bowing a little. Also, when drinking, it is proper for the younger drinker to turn their head, so as to not directly face the elders when drinking. Korean cuisine Rice is the backbone of almost every Korean meal. On rare occasions, noodles will replace the rice, but the vast majority of the time, every person eats a bowl of rice with their meal. Typically, each person will also have their own bowl of soup or stew. The side dishes and main dish or dishes–which can be meat, seafood, or tofu–are all be served family-style in the middle of the table. Sometimes a large stew will replace the main dish and will be served family-style at the table. Korean food stands out from other cuisines with the many side dishes (banchan) that are served during meals. The number of side dishes can range anywhere from 2 to 12, but everyday meals feature at least a few. When you eat at a Korean restaurant, your various side dishes will come to you before your meal in small bowls and can be anything from vegetables to meat to seafood prepared in any number of ways. Korean dishes are all served at the same time, so there are no separate courses like in Western cuisines. Everything, including meat and poultry, is cut into bite-sized pieces so there is no need for a knife. Koreans are also adept at using chopsticks so if the meat is too large or a whole grilled fish is served, it can be split with chopsticks. Many Korean meat dishes are braised or marinated for a long time for tender flesh. Korean names Unlike in Western culture, where names follow a format of Name_Surname Koreans have their names in format Surname_Name or even Surname_Clan-Name_Name. To simplify things using example, in name Kim Jong-Un, Kim represents the surname or family name while Jong-Un is the name of the person, so if we were to apply western format the name would be Jong-Un Kim. As already mentioned, many Koreans also have a middle, clan name which is usually unique for them and their same generation cousins. Example of this would be Kim Jae Sung, Kim Jae Ha, Kim Jae Min where Kim is the surname, Jae is generation level and Sung;Ha;Min are the names of people.
